Supplements That Actually Help
Most supplements do very little. A small number have decent evidence and can support your efforts.
No supplement will give you visible abs if your training and nutrition are off. But a few can make the process slightly easier or more effective.
Worth Considering
Protein powder — Convenient way to hit protein targets. Whey, casein, or a good plant blend all work. Not magic, just practical.
Creatine monohydrate (3–5 g/day) — One of the most researched supplements. Supports strength, power, and muscle retention while dieting. Safe for the vast majority of people.
Caffeine — Can improve workout performance and slightly increase calorie burn / fat oxidation. Time it before training. Avoid late in the day if it affects sleep.
Fiber supplements (e.g., psyllium) — Helpful if you struggle to get enough fiber from food. Supports satiety and digestion while in a deficit.
Vitamin D — Worth supplementing if you have low levels (common). Get bloodwork when possible.
Omega-3s (fish oil) — Useful if your diet is low in fatty fish. General health support rather than a direct fat-loss tool.
Usually Overhyped for Abs
- Most “fat burners”
- Ab-specific creams and gels
- Expensive proprietary blends with tiny doses
- Detox teas and extreme diuretics
Simple Approach
Get training and nutrition right first. Then add creatine + protein powder if they help you be consistent. Everything else is optional and secondary.
Remember: Supplements are the last 5–10%. The nutrition framework and key exercises matter far more.
