7 Best Exercises for Visible Abs

You don’t need 50 different ab movements. Focus on these high-return exercises and progressive overload.

Visible abs are primarily a body-fat issue, but stronger, thicker abdominal muscles make them look better once you’re lean enough. Here are the movements that deliver the most for most people.

1. Hanging Leg Raises (or Captains Chair)

One of the best exercises for the lower abs and overall core strength. Keep the movement controlled — avoid swinging. Progress by moving from knees tucked → straight legs → toes to bar.

2. Ab Wheel Rollouts

Exceptional for anti-extension strength (the ability to keep your spine from arching). Start on your knees. Only progress to standing when you can do clean sets of 8–12 from the knees.

3. Cable or Band Crunches

Allows progressive overload more easily than floor crunches. Focus on curling the ribcage toward the pelvis, not pulling with your arms.

4. Dead Bug

Underrated for teaching core stability and protecting the lower back. Great as a warm-up or high-rep finisher. Move slowly and keep the lower back pressed down.

5. Pallof Press

Anti-rotation exercise that builds deep core strength transferable to almost every sport and lift. Use a cable or resistance band.

6. Weighted Plank Variations

Standard planks get easy quickly. Add weight on your back or progress to long-lever or body-saw planks for continued stimulus.

7. Decline or Weighted Sit-Ups / Crunches

When done with full range and control (and ideally added weight), these still work well for many people. Pair them with the anti-extension and anti-rotation work above.

How to Program Them

  • Choose 2–3 ab exercises per session, 2–4 times per week.
  • Train them after your main lifts or on separate core-focused days.
  • Focus on progressive overload: more reps, more load, harder variations, or slower tempos.
  • Remember: diet determines visibility. Training determines how impressive they look when visible.

Next step: Pair this with a modest calorie deficit and high protein. See the Nutrition for Visible Abs guide.
